My two boys, Cayne & Riley was also asked to play a part in a short film too in which our very own Kelsey Parker had produced and and directed.
It was during the productions that Myself and Carla decided we wanted to do more projects together, as we bounced off each other creatively with ideas and ambition for the arts, so in 2020 WIF&E was born.

Helen Curston

Statement
I worked in factual production for the BBC for almost 14 years and remember all too well how difficult it was to get started. The phrase ‘it’s who you know’ was often very appropriate to a career in the media, so by allowing women who are experienced in the industry to inspire and connect with those who are just beginning is so important. I know there were moments when I wanted to give up and felt it was never going to happen, but as I gradually made contacts and gained confidence I managed to work my way into working for the BBC, moving up the ranks until I became Producer/Director and Series Director.
The reason I now work in Higher Education is to try to share some of the knowledge and experience I gained, but without organisations such as WIF&E, the job of ensuring new female talent can make it into the industry can be difficult.
Networking is so important, but so daunting when you start out, so I feel that this is a real chance to provide a platform for new talent to link up with mentors and provide information and inspiration which can take them to the next level and launch the new generation of Film and Entertainment creators and creatives. I am proud to know Carla and even prouder of what she is trying to do – ii is about time that the ‘glass ceiling’ was smashed down, and just maybe this is a way to do that.
UPDATE: Helen Now works at the Production Guild at Warner Brothers Studio.

It’s exciting to be joining WIF&E as it builds its membership and networking opportunities. I especially love how It has great ambitions to provide women coming into the industry with a springboard to succeed in spite of the many challenges that exist. Our mentors will share their knowledge and experience, act as sounding boards and support other women to progress. This is an organisation being Built by women for women ( with a few awesome men welcome too!).
And for as long as possible we will make all our events free or by voluntary donation for those who can afford to support others.

Sharon Lawrence - Actress
Before going into acting I worked in advertising and public relations, in London, working on big brands, which I really enjoyed but I have been always been passionate about performing and could be found at an early age dancing and performing in the safety of my home. As being quite a shy child I didn’t actually perform in public until my early twenties, when I returned from living and working in Washington DC, America and I decided to join a performing arts school in the evenings. I studied singing, dancing and acting and loved it all and performed at shows for a few years. It was at this time that I decided I really wanted to follow my dream of becoming a professional actor and attended Rose Bruford, an accredited drama school. Upon leaving I managed to secure an agent and went on to be cast in a few award-winning features which helped me to get a small foothold in the industry and sealed my love for acting!
I consider myself very fortunate to have been cast in quite a few award-winning films and was nominated for ‘Best Actress’ for my role in short film ‘Mano-a-Mono’ by the Maverick Movie Awards. One of my very first film roles that I landed, shortly after leaving drama school, was one-take feature ‘Victims’ by David Bryant which was screened at The Raindance Festival. Another favourite project was an EastEnders Christmas and New Year Special where I got to play the Police Officer who arrested Dean Wickes (Matt Di Angelo).
A TV Pilot I worked on ‘The Block’ by DT Productions gave me the opportunity to work with the BAFTA winning Director David Blair. There is still a possibility of this being commissioned at some stage in the future, fingers crossed.
A feature I am excited about, that is in post-production and is due out in 2021, is roller-coaster thriller ‘Innocent Candy’ where I am proud to play ‘Molly’ one of the main cast members. I
love the creativeness of acting and have been lucky to work with a number of Directors who all have their own insight into how they wish to create their vision. Collaboration is the key and to have that trust in each other that you will work together to get the best possible take. As soon as I receive a script I read it through a couple of times and then I make character notes and try and work out the emotions that my character will be going through. I like to try and be off book as soon as possible as this allows you the freedom to then make the character your own. I put a lot of work into characterization as I like to plan my character’s thoughts and emotions and then work out why and when they are experiencing these. I love improvisation work as I feel it can give your character such realism.
There are two people who have been instrumental in my journey so far, Robert Bastian, one of my first drama teachers, who is sadly no longer with us, but who was a huge influence on me going on to train professionally and Tony James, my Tutor at Rose Bruford, who I learnt so much from and continues to be an inspiration and mentor. I am also exceptionally lucky that I get to go back to Rose Bruford, on a regular basis, as a practitioner, running lectures to the Students. Although these have been put on hold at the moment, due to Covid!
Lockdown has been exceptionally difficult for everyone, but the Arts have been hit particularly hard, I feel. I tried to stay positive during the first Lockdown we had and managed to get a couple of one-to one’s with Casting Directors and performed some monologues, which I put out on social media and received some great feedback. I also did some on-line networking via Zoom and made some great connections, which resulted in securing a few castings in a couple of short films that, fingers crossed, will be shot as soon as we are out the other side of this Pandemic!
When Lockdown eased, back in September, I was lucky enough to shoot a TV Pilot called ‘Sections’ which is a hard-hitting, gritty drama based on the realities of a UK adolescent psychiatric unit.
I started on my 'acting' journey a little later than some but I have been incredibly lucky to have worked on some great projects already. I am happy to continue on this path and look forward to working on many more amazing productions and continuing to learn and grow as a performer. I feel very privileged to be doing something that I love and feel grateful to everyone that has given me an opportunity.
